New Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho said that his coaching of the team and his reputation will attract more attention to the Turkish Super League, adding that his goal is to win the title and qualify for the group stage of the Champions League next season.
Mourinho (61 years old) was presented in front of thousands of enthusiastic Fenerbahce fans, and the Portuguese coach has not been linked to any team since Roma dismissed his services last January.
Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul, Mourinho said that he does not make any promises except “great commitment, passion and enthusiasm,” adding that his ambition to come to Turkey “attracts more attention to this league.” He said: “One of the things is that I attract attention with me.” More people in Europe will follow the Turkish League because of me. I am coming to work for Turkish football, for the Turkish Super League. But I came mainly to work for Fenerbahce.”
“My wish is for Turkish football to improve at all levels,” he added. But if I have to raise my voice to defend Fenerbahce, I will not think twice,” he said, apparently referring to the club’s complaints about what he describes as injustice.
The Turkish Premier League was marred by disputes last season, with a wave of violence and disputes that cast a shadow over the intense struggle for the title between Fenerbahce and its rival, Galatasaray, and Galatasaray won the title in the final round of the season last month.
Mourinho said that the upcoming European Championship will hamper the team’s preparations for the presence of players with their teams, and will not enable it to make changes to the squad except at the beginning of the season, adding that his main goal is to win the league and reach the group stage of the Champions League, where Fenerbahce is competing in the tournament qualifying round.
He added: “When people look at me – I have reached six European finals, five of which I won – they immediately think about big things. But I think we have to move forward step by step. Of course the supplement will be difficult; Because we simply do not have time to prepare.
Mourinho said he had no interest in signing players he had previously coached, including Argentine midfielder Paulo Dybala and Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku from Roma.
Club President Ali Koc announced that no new contracts with the players will be announced until the presidential elections are completed early next week, as Koc will compete with Aziz Yildirim for the position of club president.
