Vice President Hamilton Mourão (Republicans) reacted this Monday, 25, to the statement by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), that the Armed Forces are being used to discredit the electoral system in Brazil. “The Armed Forces are not children to be mentored,” Mourão told Gaúcha Zero Hora.
To Brazilian students in Germany, Barroso said by videoconference this Sunday, 24, that there is a political movement with the intention of using the Armed Forces to attack the electoral process in the country. Speaking to a group of Brazilian students via videoconference, Barroso defended the integrity of electronic voting machines and condemned attempts to politicize the military. “It is necessary to pay attention to this cucaracha setback of returning to the Latin American tradition of getting the Army involved in politics. It is a bad mix for democracy and a bad mix for the Armed Forces”, said the minister.
Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio issued a note in which he called the magistrate’s statement “irresponsible” and a “serious offense”.
