Raul Fernandez will undergo surgery again to resolve a compartment syndrome problem. A year ago, the Spaniard had to withdraw from the French GP after an unusually extensive first operation for such a problem, since it involved nine muscles and required incisions in three different places on the arm.
Fernandez has started to suffer again since the start of the season and will undergo surgery in Barcelona on Tuesday, after the Mugello tests, in which he had a 2024 version Aprilia RS-GP at his disposal, but completed only a handful of laps because of the rain.
“I had problems again,” Fernandez explained after 12th place in the Italian GP. “Since the beginning of the year I have still had arm pump problems and on Tuesday I will have to undergo another operation. I am happy with the work done, but in the last seven laps I had to manage the situation, as in the previous race. It’s the same thing since the start of the year”.

“I’m happy because we saw the problem, I’m happy with the work we’re doing, but honestly it’s difficult to ride the bike. I had a lot of problems, I did my best, I tried to finish the race in a good position. I had a lot arm problems, but now we have a solution because in Barcelona, with Marc (Marquez) and Aleix (Espargaro), I wasn’t able to fight for the podium for this reason.”
The surgery needed to resolve arm pump is generally benign. The operation consists of cutting the membrane in which the muscle is housed (hence the name compartment syndrome) to relieve it of pressure. Fernandez had known for several days that he would have to undergo surgery and decided to take advantage of the four-week break before Assen, following the postponement of the Kazakhstan GP.
“Before I couldn’t talk about it because I wanted to concentrate. Before coming here, I saw a doctor. We saw that it was coming back a little. It wasn’t easy for me to concentrate on the weekend, but I think we did a good job and I’m happy Now we have to think about recovery”, he concluded.
