Jorge Martin will end his current professional adventure with Pramac Racing in the 2024 season. The current leader of the MotoGP general classification was in contention for the second official Ducati seat for the next seasons and seemed close to winning it upon arrival at Mugello in on Thursday, after the confirmation of the top management of the Borgo Panigale team. But, after the news leaked, Marc Marquez rejected the option of racing for Paolo Campinoti’s team and forced his hand by speculating on a possible exit from the ranks of the Italian company.
In the end, Ducati considered a change of heart and, faced with this situation, Martin chose to pass up the possibility of riding the future GP25 and signed for Aprilia on a multi-year contract, replacing his good friend Aleix Espargaro.
In this way, the driver from San Sebastián de los Reyes will leave the team with which he has spent his entire sporting life in the premier class, starting from the 2021 season, when he won his first pole position and his first podium. In 2022, after a serious injury in Portugal, he achieved his first victory, in the Austrian GP, but his performance was not enough to earn him the Red suit, with Ducati choosing Enea Bastianini for the structure factory.
The Spaniard recovered from what happened and went from strength to strength in 2023, ending up fighting for the title against Pecco Bagnaia, especially starting from Montmeló. Martin took the fight to Valencia, but on the last Sunday of the year the crown slipped to the reigning champion. Once again, Martín came back stronger this season, with 2 wins and 5 podiums in the long races, as well as 3 victories in the Sprints, making him the leader since the Portuguese GP, the second of the year.
On Tuesday, after his departure to the Noale factory was confirmed, Pramac Racing wanted to say goodbye to its rider, with whom in 2023 he made history as the best independent team, the first time that a satellite led the classification in the modern era of MotoGP. And he confirmed that he will support him until the end and will do “everything possible” to try to finish “in the best possible way”, realizing his dream of winning the World Championship.
“We welcomed a talented rookie to our team and today we work with one of the strongest riders on the MotoGP grid. The progress we have made together is incredible and we remain focused on the goal we set ourselves at the end of last year. After the Valencia GP, we will say goodbye to Martin, wishing him the best for his future”, declared Paolo Campinoti, owner of the team.
“I am grateful and proud to work with Jorge: one of the strongest and most talented riders I have ever known. From now on, we will continue to give our all to reach the maximum together, remaining focused on this season, which has started so well wonderful. I hope that Jorge, once he has decided his future, can enjoy the rest of the season with us”, concluded Team Manager, Gino Borsoi.
