Not only Valentino Rossi. In Valencia, on November 14th, another Italian rider definitively said goodbye to the premier category of the World Championship. Since that day Danilo Petrucci he is no longer a MotoGP rider. A new, dangerous but also extremely fascinating challenge awaits him on the horizon: the Dakar. A first year of adaptation, 2022, in an attempt to understand if it will actually be possible for the Terni player to think of a concrete future in rally raids or if it will be necessary to look for yet another way. That in the top class was for him a difficult and fluctuating adventure, which perhaps did not give him the triumphs he deserved – with the pearl of the victory at Mugello in 2019 which remains unforgettable – but which brought him the affection of all .
Affection but not respect, as he himself commented, perhaps even with a hint of bitterness, during an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. “You can’t be both – admitted Petrux, who ended his career in KTM after many seasons linked to Ducati, with the icing on the cake of the two vintages faced as a rider of the official team – I was born in the MotoGP paddock, I’ve known everyone for more than 25 years. There are those who know me as Danilone’s son, then when I returned I was a MotoGP rider. I have worked with many people and with all of them I have remained in very good relations, and when it came to taking on responsibilities, I have always taken them on. I have never raised my voice to defend myself and this has sometimes led to putting my feet on my head“.

A ‘good’, Petrucci, in a world that often turns out to be ‘ruthless’ and where it is often convenient to show a more aggressive side. Precisely this peculiarity can be seen as a virtue, but also as a flaw, from certain points of view. “When you hear ‘Danilo is too good’, the line is blurred – admitted Petrucci – it depends on the pitch you use. And in this case your best value becomes your biggest flaw. I think, too many times I’ve been too good. It’s fine with friends, but who you work with is not a virtue“.
