During the 2021 season, KTM strengthened its MotoGP team with Fabiano Sterlacchini, who previously worked at Ducati. In this way, the Austrian company has restructured the project and feels ready to find the maximum yield. In 2022, Sterlacchini’s role is that of technical director of the team and his task is to coordinate the different departments of the chassis, engine, shock absorbers, electronics, and so on.
Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsport Director, said: “Fabiano is now the clear leader of the technical department, because everyone has already shown they can build a winning bike. Fabiano doesn’t come here to show us how we should work, but he is an engineer of excellent qualities. We have many smart people who understand both sides. So, with all his experience he will coordinate on the one hand what the racing department needs on the track, and on the other hand what the whole group needs to do off the track ”.
The RC16 for the 2022 MotoGP season is not a completely new bike like the Honda RC213V. During winter testing, KTM has focused on optimizing several aspects of the package already developed, and riders like Miguel Oliveira think it will be some time before the staff changes behind the scenes show up in the form of results on the track.
“Fabiano is an excellent added value, I think he can help us a lot,” said Oliveira. “But it takes time to see the results. At the moment he is trying to get to know the project, what the bike needs and what we riders want. We talk a lot, undoubtedly it represents an important step for us ”.
Brad Binder added: “Fabiano is a strong guy, it’s great to have him on our team. He is a quiet person and analyzes everything. At the end of last year he was watching everything and now we are starting to bring the new ideas. I noticed that he is very good at analyzing our situation, where we are strong and where we lose. We don’t insist on things that don’t make us go fast. He is concentrated and above all he is concentrated in the right areas ”.
According to Beirer, Sterlacchini is basically part of the “motivational impulse” that is felt in KTM right now. After seven months, the Mattighofen manufacturer is very impressed with what Sterlacchini has brought to the team.
