The 2021 season of Marc Marquez, the one that marked the return to competition of the Cervera champion after the long injury to his right humerus that kept him out for a year, ended with two consecutive victories in Austin and Misano. In fact, the Honda ace ended his championship with success in Italy, as the injury suffered in motocross training put an end to his championship. The absence of Portimao had left several doubts about the real extent of the concussion suffered in the impact and this Tuesday, following a specialist visit, Marquez confirmed that he suffered from diplopia, or of double vision, as had already happened to him in the distant past 2011. The eight-time world champion had in fact been operated on to remedy the paralysis of the superior oblique muscle, caused by a trauma to the fourth cranial nerve on the right, suffered in the accident that took place in the free practice in Malaysia. The ’93’ had gone under the knife in mid-January, returning regularly to the track for the first race of the season two months later.
Ten years later Marquez finds himself struggling with the same injury, as explained by Doctor Bernardo Sanchez Dalmau, who treated him then and who is also treating him now: “The tests carried out today on Marc Marquez after the accident confirmed that the rider suffers from diplopia and revealed a paralysis of the fourth right nerve with involvement of the right upper oblique muscle. A conservative treatment was chosen with periodic updates to follow its clinical evolution. This fourth right nerve is the one that was already injured in 2011“. Honda in a statement made it clear that the rider will not return to the track in 2021 and explained how Marquez has continued to feel bad even in the last few days, accusing vision problems, despite the rest imposed on him in the last week.
