“Out of seven races, in two I ended up on the ground due to contact. It wasn't the best start to the season, but I remain of the opinion that the wheel turns for everyone and will turn for us too.” Pecco Bagnaia seems to have taken it almost philosophically and it's not easy, given that his Sprint lasted just two laps and one corner in Jerez. And that it wasn't his fault that his race ended so soon.
The Ducati rider was the victim of the aggressiveness of Brad Binder who, after going very long at turn 13 in an attempt to overtake Marc Marquez, saw himself passed by Pecco and Marco Bezzecchi. Not happy, once he arrived at the first braking point, the KTM rider tried to overtake both Ducati riders, even passing over the internal curb. At that point, when he spread out, he couldn't help but hit the world champion who found himself sandwiched between him and Bezzecchi, ending up on the ground.
And the most sensational thing is that the commissioners decided not to take action, considering it all a normal racing accident, even if Pecco doesn't seem to agree too much: “The decision is theirs because they do this for a living, so they will be right But in my opinion a driver cannot try to overtake two others from the curb and it ended the way it did, because I retired at the beginning of the third and I got there There were at least four contacts before mine. Let's say that the strategy was a bit beyond the limit.”
When he was then asked what in his opinion was due to the fact that today there was an aggressiveness that hadn't been seen in the Sprints for some time, he added: “We are back on a track on which last year there had been two red flags. It's narrow, with slow corners, so it leads you to have more contact.”
The disappointment is also linked to the fact that the performance of his Ducati seemed good enough to be able to try to chase victory: “I was fifth and I was faster than the guys in front of me, I was just trying to understand when to attack, but not me. they gave it time. In certain situations, however, you really struggle to attack because the others make really strange lines. Let's say that in the Sprint overtaking is not calculated at all: you just throw yourself into it, at most you touch the other driver. or go wide. That's the strategy and it's difficult to manage.”
And the objective will be victory tomorrow too, even if seventh place on the grid obviously complicates things a bit: “Qualifying didn't go well and certainly when it started to dry I struggled a bit more. However, I was fifth in the race and staying close to the group still allows you to fight to win, but you also need to have the chance tomorrow so you have to start better to try to pass others and immediately remove yourself from the animalistic fight that is created in that phase. At that point I might try to do my pace, which is good enough to try to win.”
