Pedro Acosta continues to have an impact on Spanish society and especially on motorcycling enthusiasts. The driver from Murcia amazes with his natural and spontaneous way of being and, naturally, with the results he achieves on the track. The 2021 Moto3 and 2023 Moto2 champion is exceeding many of the expectations placed on him, which were already high, upon his arrival in MotoGP.
If he had already made people talk about himself in Qatar before inexperience and tire failure played a bad trick on him, in the Portuguese GP, in Portimao, he managed to make a notable step forward in terms of maturity. He left two images to remember, the overtaking on the eight-time world champion Marc Marquez and the one on the two-time reigning champion of the premier class Pecco Bagnaia, before benefiting from a technical problem suffered by Maverick Vinales' Aprilia, which allowed him delivered his first MotoGP podium on a silver platter.
Thus, before leaving for Austin for the next Grand Prix of the Americas, Acosta had the opportunity to stop and reflect on his current moment this Wednesday in the famous Pablo Motos program “El Hormiguero”, on Antena 3. The visit of the ” Shark of Mazarrón” made the program the most watched non-journalistic content of the day, with 2,107,000 viewers, equal to a 15.8% share, as well as having been seen at some point by 4,371,000 people.
One of the main topics covered by the Spaniard was the overtaking on Marquez in Portimao. Acosta compared their meetings on the track to those that the Cervera rider had in the past with Valentino Rossi. A comparison that Marc himself made recently. This served to vindicate Pedro as someone who gets to dot the i's in MotoGP: “It seems easier on TV than how I experienced it. He did it with Rossi and now I did it. You have to be the fly that busts balls. Sticking your head out and making a bit of a mess. It was nice.”
Number 31 also explained that he wants to enjoy the moment, while looking back and seeing how much has changed and also how much he has suffered, like in 2022: “I hope everything is as good as it is now. I have fun and I get paid for what I do, so what more do I want! I see how much I've changed since I've been at the World Cup: I arrived when I was 16 and now I'm almost 20, I've changed a bit. The first year went very well, the third went very well, but the second year was tough, it was tough at the beginning, and I think I'm a different rider now than I was when I started. If I hadn't learned and matured, I would have been kicked out of the business by now. World Championship, because the pace at which I broke the bikes was not normal.”
Acosta also spoke about his debut in Qatar and the changes he is seeing in MotoGP. One of these is represented by Sprints. He explained: “The long race in Qatar was the first real race I did, because the Sprint on Saturday is a 'pachanga' to position yourself for Sunday. So, I got to the grid, I took off my helmet, they approached me and they said, 'Give it your all.' And I gave it my all.”
Finally, the GasGas Tech3 rider, who thanked his family for all the sacrifices made to pursue his sporting career, told some anecdotes, such as the one about when he put his trousers up for sale: “I have a very big ego and I search for things about myself on Google. One day it occurred to me to look on Wallapop to see what Pedro Acosta was selling, and I saw that there were boots, sliders, gloves and things that were not mine, but that they said be. So I got tired of it and thought I'd fool them by selling my used, used but good, Victoria trousers,” he explained.
