A woman, in complicity with her partner, gave her 11-year-old daughter to a man in exchange for a vehicle and money, the authorities reported on Thursday, reporting the arrest of the three accused of rape and abuse against the girl.
“The mother of the 11-year-old minor, along with her partner who was the minor's stepfather, received a motor vehicle and cash monthly to allow the arrested person to abuse her daughter,” said Security Minister Gustavo Sánchez.
The case that has shocked Hondurans occurred in the community of Jutiapa, department of El Paraíso, about 80 kilometers east of Tegucigalpa.
“They were arrested through preventive detention because they were presumed responsible for the crimes of continuous rape (…) of the minor,” argued the minister.
Yahdai Varela, spokesperson for the Secretary of Children, said that “The girl is under the protection of the State.”
According to the Violence Observatory of the National Autonomous University of Honduras, this Central American country is the “most dangerous” in Latin America for women. In 2023, 380 femicides were recorded, compared to 308 in 2022.
