Use a digital wallet It is increasingly common among citizens. Carrying boarding passes for travel or credit cards on your mobile phone to facilitate payments is common. But what if you can also carry your driving license, a medical prescription or an academic degree and have it be valid in all European countries? This will be possible for more than 448 million inhabitants, representing 5.6% of the world population. This is the digital identity project that will be available in the countries of the European Union.
The digital identity wallet, in the form of a mobile application or other technological device, seeks to provide citizens with a secure and efficient way to identify themselves. Users may store their identifying information and other aspects related to their identity (such as driving licenses, educational credentials or professional permits) to be able to identify themselves both online and offline, exchange this information for access to public and private services or to authorize online transactions, particularly where strong user authentication is required.
There are various cases in which it is possible to use this digital identity. These may be: providing access to public services, such as requesting a birth or medical certificate or communicating a change of address; opening a bank account; filing a tax return; applying for a place at a university, in the country of residence or in another Member State; storing a prescription so that it can be used anywhere in Europe; the demonstration of age; renting a car using a digital driving license or checking into a hotel. And it is a purse where it is possible to centralize the different documents with all security and privacy measures.
It will be issued by each of the EU Member States, which must follow common guidelines and standards
“Every time an app or website asks us to create a new digital identity or easily connect through a large platform, we actually have no idea what is happening with our data. For this reason, The Commission will propose a secure European electronic identity. An identity that we trust and that every citizen can use anywhere in Europe for any type of operation, from paying taxes to renting a bicycle. A technology that allows us to control what data is used and how,” said the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in her State of the Union speech, on September 16, 2020.
In all Member States
This portfolio will be issued by each of the EU Member States. To do this, they must follow common guidelines and standards, with the aim of guaranteeing interoperability and trust in the system. The wallet will be valid to access public services that require electronic identification in all Member States. In addition, private service providers such as transportation, energy, social security, financial services, postal services or health will be required to accept this method as a means of online identification.
That is, both Public and private services are obliged to recognize the digital identity wallets of the European Union. In the case of the latter, especially when a high level of guarantee of the identity of their clients is necessary. For example, in the case of payments and opening bank accounts.
Maximum security
Users will be given full control to choose which aspects of their identity, data and certificates they want to share with third parties, and the ability to track them later. Resident citizens will be able to prove their identity throughout the territoryif necessary, to access online services, provide digital documents or simply demonstrate a specific personal attribute without revealing your identity or other personal data. Citizens will decide whether they want to have a wallet and, if so, wallet users will be able to control what personal data they wish to provide to online services at all times and with whom they share it.
But how can the European citizen get the digital identity wallet? Member States will offer it to their citizens and residents at national level. TEveryone can download it, install it and use it on their mobile phone or personal device. EU countries can make use of national digital electronic identification systems to facilitate the registration of citizens wishing to use the wallet (with the help of additional security measures where necessary).
