Around 101,000 homes have already been destroyed or damaged by the heavy rains that have been ravaging Rio Grande do Sul for days, according to an estimate from the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM). To date, the climate disaster has affected 447 of the 497 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul.
The climate disaster resulted in 143 deaths, according to the most recent bulletin released by the State Civil Defense. In addition, there are 125 missing and 806 injured. More than 2.1 million people were affected by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul.
Among the homes that suffered damage, 92,600 were damaged and another 8,400 were destroyed. The CNM estimates that the rains have so far caused R$8.4 billion in financial losses to Rio Grande do Sul, more than half of which in the housing area (R$4.5 billion).
The data, however, may be underreported, as the affected cities are currently focusing their efforts on rescuing and welcoming affected families. In addition to seeking to alert the population on how to proceed in the event of imminent new flooding.
On the afternoon of this Sunday, the 12th, for example, the city hall of Canoas, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, issued an alert requesting the evacuation of residents in six neighborhoods of the city due to the risk of flooding: Rio Branco, Fátima, Mato Grande, Harmonia, Mathias Velho and São Luis. “The waters will return,” said Mayor Jairo Jorge.
The CNM highlights that, of the 447 municipalities affected, only 62 began to enter values about losses in the Integrated Disaster Information System (S2iD), of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development. The amount of R$8.4 billion, therefore, concerns only a portion of the cities.
The 143 deaths recorded so far are also part of a partial toll, which will probably increase. According to Civil Defense, there are 806 injured and 131 missing, but even this number could be even higher.
The National Confederation of Municipalities stated that, according to data entered by municipalities in S2iD, there are 815 missing people, mainly concentrated in four cities in Rio Grande do Sul: Eldorado do Sul (300), Gramado Xavier (164), Candelária (120) and Canoas ( 114).
