One of the scenes from the ‘Water Lilies’ by the impressionist painter Claude Monet triumphed at the great New York modern art auction of Sotheby’s. After a close dispute, over the value of 61 million eurosa buyer of Asian origin bought this iconic painting. The sale exceeded initial expectations, although it did not manage to surpass the record reached in 2019 after the transaction of one of the scenes from the series ‘Pajar’, estimated at 110.7 million.
These water lilies came from the inheritance of more than 170 million Sydell Miller. The one also known as “the beauty queen” had a private collection of 25 pieces which also included works by other great painters, such as Henry Matisse, Kandinsky, Picasso and Alexander Calder.
Monet’s ‘The Water Lilies’: a sign of identity
If a series that really marks the course of Claude Monet’s work was ‘Water Lilies’. Composed of almost 300 paintings, the impressionist began to late 1890s and ended up perfecting the canvases during the last years of his life. Actually, his obsession with light and color began when he settled in Giverny. There he found inspiration in a lush water garden with weeping willows, a Japanese bridge and the famous water lilies.
Today, his house and this beautiful garden can be visited. Likewise, in the Orangery Museum Eight of the largest compositions of Monet’s Nymphéas are found.
A millionaire bid with Picasso and Kandinsky
The auction managed to raise more than 216 million. In addition to Monet’s 61, two works by Pablo Picasso. ‘La Statuaire’ which reached a final price of 24.8 million and ‘Tête de femme’, a bronze bust that sold for almost 7 million.
In addition, there was no shortage of pieces by other great artists of modern art such as ‘Jeune fille en robe rose’ by Henri Matisse that was auctioned for 9.7 million or an untitled work by Mark Rothko sold for 5 million.
