Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that he is “confident” of winning a third term following the conclusion of the voting process in the general elections that began six weeks ago.
Modi led his Bharatiya Janata Party to landslide victories in the elections in 2014 and 2019.
The vote counting process and election results are scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
Shortly after the polls closed, Modi said on the X platform, “I can say with confidence that the people of India voted in record numbers to re-elect the government.”
A poll conducted by the Indian CNN-News 18 network on Saturday, after the end of voting, showed that Modi is on his way to achieving his third consecutive landslide victory in the elections.
According to the poll, his party is expected to obtain at least 355 seats in the House of Representatives, exceeding the majority set at 272 seats.
Analysts unanimously agreed that Modi would win at the expense of the coalition opposing him, which could not even agree on a single name to nominate him to the position of Prime Minister.
Modi’s fortunes were further enhanced by a series of criminal investigations targeting his opponents. Modi also benefited locally from strengthening India’s diplomatic and economic presence in the global arena, especially after it became the fifth largest economic power in the world in 2022, ahead of Britain.
“As an Indian, I think he (Modi) gained India a lot of respect and prestige during his reign,” Shikha Agrawal (40 years old) said as she waited to cast her vote, today, Saturday, adding, “People now look at India and Indians with a lot of respect.”
For his part, Brijesh Taksali said, “I vote for growth and development in my country. I only know one leader… Narendra Modi, I voted for him.”
About one billion people are entitled to cast their votes in the most populous country in the world. The elections were held in seven stages over a period of six weeks, with the aim of reducing as much as possible the organizational burden of a voting process of this size over a vast geographical area.
