Modernist architecture broke into Spain at the end of the 19th century, bringing with them an air of novelty and rebellion against traditional styles. Inspired by European Corrientes such as Art Nouveau, Jugendstil or Sezesssionstil, modernism was characterized by the incorporation of natural elements, asymmetry and creative use of materials such as iron and glass. Its essence has made many Spanish cities true outdoor museums, where each building tells a history of innovation and passion for detail.
Throughout the national territory, this movement adapted to the peculiarities of each region, merging the local tradition with the avant -garde inspiration. With these twelve examples we travel through cities that retain the modernist footprint in its streets, inviting us to walk between ornate facades, patios full of history and corners that break with what surrounds them. And although we could add more destinations, no doubt Barcelona, Zaragoza, Comillas, Melilla, Lleida, Valencia, Cartagena, León, Reus, Madrid, Gijón and Bilbao are excellent representatives of Spanish modernism.
