The death of a nurse after drinking a slimming tea has reignited the debate over drugs that promise miraculous aesthetic effects, but which can be harmful to health. According to Metrópoles, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has published more than 60 preventive and/or precautionary measures against products similar to 50 Ervas Emagrecedor.
Added to all measures, Anvisa has banned 144 natural remedies to lose weight since 2020.

Anvisa must authorize any drug with therapeutic properties in Brazil before being marketed in pharmacies. The municipality explains that slimming tea could not be classified either as a medicine or as a food supplement, as it has ingredients that could be present in herbal medicines.
In partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Anvisa is developing a pilot project to monitor the online sale of irregular medicines. This is because it is very common to sell unauthorized drugs that promise magical solutions over the internet.
Anvisa guides that the consumer should be suspicious of therapeutic products and that they look for the regulation of a particular medicine. Products that promise miracles should also always be looked at carefully.
