Ministry of Health issues health alert for measles in Mexico: what are the symptoms in babies

Recently, the Ministry of Health in Mexico has launched a health alert for cases of measles in the country and has called on parents to be alert to the symptoms of the disease and to reinforce vaccination schedules to prevent future outbreaks.

The symptoms of measles in babies are:

  • High fever: It can exceed 40 degrees Celsius and last up to 4 days.
  • Cough: Persistent and dry.
  • Nasal discharge: Abundant and annoying.
  • Watery, red eyes: Conjunctivitis that causes sensitivity to light.
  • Koplik's spots: Small white spots in the mouth, two or three days after the fever.
  • Rash: Appears 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms, starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. It can last up to a week.

It is crucial to be aware of these symptoms and see a doctor immediately if they occur in a baby.. Measles is not only uncomfortable, it can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death.

How to protect your baby?

Vaccination: The best defense against measles is vaccination. The MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine is administered in two doses, the first at 12-15 months and the second at 4-6 years.

Avoid contact: If your baby is not vaccinated, keep him or her away from people with measles symptoms.
