The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, will intervene for one year in all state media outlets as part of its policy of reorganizing public companies, according to a decree published this Monday (5) in the Official Gazette.
The portal “Educ.ar”, “Radio Nacional”, “Televisión Pública”, the news agency “Télam” and the channels with segmented public content (“Encuentro”, “Paka Paka”, “Depor TV”, ” ACUA Mayor” and “ACUA Federal”) are included in the list of communication vehicles that will undergo intervention for one year – with the option of extension – by decree 117/2024.
The administration of the Audiovisual Production Hub and the assets of the Argentinian Universal Audiovisual Content Bank (Bacua) are also included.
The intervention's mission will be to “develop a reformulation, readjustment and action plan for companies”, which will include reviewing resource management, modifying the hiring regime and appointing or suspending employees.
Furthermore, among the objectives of the interveners is to “optimize administrative management with the aim of making these companies sustainable”, all within the announced search of the government chaired by Milei for “greater efficiency in the functioning of the public sector”.
The decree appoints Diego Chaher and Diego Marías as intervenor and deputy intervenor, respectively, of “Radio y Televisión Argentina” and, in an “ad honorem” capacity, of “Télam”, “Contenidos Públicos” and “Educ.ar”. Both are under the authority of Nicolás Posse, head of the cabinet of ministers.
After the decree was published in the Official Gazette, the Argentine Federation of Press Workers (Fatpren) considered this intervention as a “violation of current legislation” with the argument that it goes “over the top of the National Congress”, since “some of the intervened companies have directors voted by different parliamentary representations, who will be deprived of any role”.
In a statement published on social media, the group highlights that “it is clear that the Executive Branch's intention is to privatize public media outlets to make them a business, perhaps a real estate business, functional to the private communication sectors.” (With EFE Agency)
