Sergey Milinkovic-Savic, Mattia Zakani, Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson scored Lazio’s goals, as coach Maurizio Sarri’s team jumped to third place, one point behind second-ranked Milan and 13 points behind leaders Napoli.
The disappointing results continued for Milan after its 3-0 defeat against rivals Inter Milan in the Italian Super Cup last week, and its exit from the Italian Cup by losing to ten players from Turin the week before last.
“There are many things that are not going well (at Milan) at the moment,” Milan coach Stefano Pioli said.
“We suffer from mental and tactical problems because our nets are conceded from situations that can be dealt with completely differently.”
Milinkovic-Savic gave the hosts the lead four minutes later with a low shot after Zakani’s pass.
Zakani strengthened Lazio’s superiority in the 38th minute, after he followed Adam Marusic’s counterattack shot off the post.
Milan almost reduced the gap, but Ismail Bin Nasser’s free kick shot just past the goal four minutes after the break.
Winger Luis Alberto made it 3-0 from the penalty spot, which Spaniard Pedro won after a tackle from Pierre Kalulu.
Midfielder Felipe Anderson finished Lazio’s goals a quarter of an hour before the end after Luis Alberto’s cross pass, raising his tally to six goals in the league.
Milinkovic-Savic said about the possibility of Lazio achieving its first league title since 1999-2000, “Why not? We performed this performance against the defending champions, so why can’t we do it?”
He added, “If we perform similarly to what we did in the last three victories, we can compete. There are moments when performance declines, but we try to limit these moments as much as possible.”
Lazio, who played without injured striker Ciro Immobile, play 11th-placed Fiorentina on Sunday, while Milan return to host Sassuolo, who sit just above the relegation zone.
