The governments of Italy and Albania see it as a model for the EU: decisions on asylum applications for Italy should be made in Albania. But there is great resistance to this in both countries.
AOn Monday, the Chamber of Deputies in Rome is due to vote on a draft law that the center-right government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attaches central importance to limiting migration to Italy. Consent is considered certain. This is intended to create the legal basis for Italy to operate a reception center and a deportation center for illegal migrants in Albania. Meloni and Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama signed a declaration of intent on this at the beginning of November.
The two centers will have a monthly capacity of 3,000 people. Every year, up to 36,000 migrants in northern Albania are to be registered by Italian officials, given initial care and then either deported to their home countries or taken to Italy to continue their asylum procedure.
