Middle East | Lebanon says Israel killed three rescue workers

Hezbollah retaliated with a rocket attack on Israel.

An extremist organization Hezbollah said early Sunday morning that it launched a rocket attack on a village in northern Israel in retaliation for Israeli attacks. According to Hezbollah’s press release, it was a response to Israel’s attack on southern Lebanon, which targeted rescue workers.

According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, three rescue workers were killed in an Israeli attack on Saturday. In addition, according to the ministry, two people were wounded in the attack on the fire truck, one of them seriously.

Ministry said rescue workers had been putting out a fire caused by an earlier Israeli strike. Prime Minister of Lebanon Najib Mikati condemned the attack, calling it a violation of international law.

According to Lebanon, it was the second attack on rescue workers within 12 hours. In an earlier attack, two rescue workers were reportedly wounded.

Hezbollah and Israel have fired at each other in the border area almost daily since the Gaza war began more than eleven months ago. More than 610 people have died on the Lebanese side, according to the AFP news agency, of which almost 140 have been civilians. According to the authorities, 24 soldiers and 26 civilians have died in Israel and its occupied Golan Heights.
