There weakness of the PC market it will last a long time, at least according to what was said by Microsoft to explain the 39% decline in Windows OEM revenue. Incidentally, OEM refers to the major hardware manufacturers, such as HP, Lenovo and Dell, which sell PCs with Windows pre-installed.
The figure is worrying, in the sense that the collapse in sales of windows it is definitely related to that of PCs, since there have been no major changes in the offer (no migration to Linux, for example).
Microsoft itself cited “continued weakness in the PC market and a very strong prior year” to explain the decline. That the situation was not good was already clear from the data of companies like Canalys, which reported a decline in the PC market of 29% in the last quarter of last year and of 16% compared to the whole of 2021. Putting that in perspective however, 2022 sales are still higher than those of 2019, i.e. the pre-pandemic period, but the problem of market contraction remains, which cannot be ignored.
The PC market crisis won’t be over any time soon, as Microsoft forecasts a 30% decline in OEM Windows for the first quarter of 2023. Sales will probably return to pre-pandemic levels, but we’ll see.
