The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said Thursday that she will call the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Madurobefore the end of his mandate in a week, to discuss pending issues in the field of human rights.
He maintained that he wants to talk with the leader about “promises that should not be forgotten“, after the opening of a line of cooperation between the Venezuelan Government and Bachelet’s body as of 2019 and which has allowed the establishment of a UN human rights office in the country.

In a press conference in which he took stock of his four-year mandate, which ends on the 31st, the high commissioner requested that the dialogue between the government and the opposition be resumedand highlighted the importance of a political transition in Venezuela.
I hope that this will change in the near future and that soon we will also have access to court hearings.
Bachelet defended this cooperation in the face of criticism that the Maduro government has used it to clean up its image.
He explained that a climate of collaboration was created not only with the authorities, but also with civil society organizations, compared to the previous situation “where there was nothing, whereas today we have 16 employees there“.

Representatives from Bachelet’s office in Caracas work with victims of human rights violations and have been able to visit prisons where political prisoners are held, although the visits have been suspended. The reason given was the covid-19 pandemic.
“I hope that this will change in the near future and that soon we will also have access to court hearings.“, he added.
