The brand MG Motor undoubtedly wants to establish itself, after having also landed in Italy with a growth supported by the Chinese parent company, SAIC Motors. While the aforementioned group is currently the first car manufacturer in China and seventh in the world, MG is grappling with a complete renewal of its heritage as well, with a present and a future that will be as global and low-emission as possible. In fact, of the 37,000 cars sold in Europe so far, 58% of them are electrified. And in the major markets, consolidation has yet to arrive which, net of the EV offer and a highly competitive gasoline model, should be within reach.
Today MG in Italy has improved its organization, with 20 people forming the backbone of the management team, and with 40 dealers and 70 points of sale to be reached by the end of the year 2021. Everything, they say with pride, has been built in eight months, and in fact the motto is “do things better and before others“. For now, there have been 1000 Italian registrations, but this was “only the warm-up“,”because the real race will be in 2022“: These were the words of the country manager Andrea Bartolomeo.
To conquer the market there will be essentially five models on the list, including the EHS SUV. There will be Marvel R electric, SUV with three configurations (comfort, luxury and performance) with overall discrete performance and range (288 horsepower, range up to 400 kilometers, Bose stereo system). The Comfort and Luxury trim levels both have rear-wheel drive, two electric motors, a system output of 132 kW (180 hp), 410 Nm of torque and a WLTP range of 402 kilometers. The Performance trim adds an electric motor to the front axle and offers permanent all-wheel drive. System power and peak torque are set at 212 kW (288 hp) and 665 Nm, combined with a range of 370 kilometers (WLTP). It will cost 32,550 euros including ecobonus, or 199 euros per month, as a base price. Then it will also be in Italy there MG5, an electric station wagon that certainly intrigues because there are not many totally ‘battery’ cars with family dimensions. In fact MG presents it as “first electric SW in the world“. Inside is a floating 10.25-inch screen that tilts towards the driver. The seats are covered with 2 cm of soft foam for greater comfort. It has a range of 400 km with a 61 kWh battery, and 2,220 W output power to recharge any external device. It will be available from the beginning of 2022, at a price of around 30 thousand euros.
It will also come the new version of the 100% electric ZS, with a more contemporary style and greater autonomy. The London style center redesigned the profile, making it more muscular, and updated the front and rear. The interior features a 10.1-inch iSmart touch screen, with a new infotainment system and an overall update of safety devices. The batteries will be 50.3 kWh and 70 kWh, with autonomy in the second case up to 440 kilometers (WLTP). The top of the range, with Luxury equipment and the largest battery, will cost 39,490 euros.
Finally, there will be a traditional novelty, with a petrol-powered ZS that could prove to be a rival of the Dacia Sandero. It is fitted with a 1.5 aspirated engine or a 1.0 turbo with manual or automatic transmission, and comfort or luxury equipment (equipped with a panoramic roof). The price will be highly competitive, only 13,950 euros, with immediate availability on the market.
MG has also taken steps to give value to its financial and communication initiatives. Several partnerships have been developed: with Santander for financial offers; with Arval / BNP Paribas, to launch the MG Rent rental service; with Enel X.
