The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) of Mexico asked this Tuesday the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) “comprehensive repair of the damage” for a woman in the center of the country who was the victim of the mistaken amputation of both legs and the removal of the uterus.

According to the agency, the victim, 27, required the removal of an intrauterine device (IUD) that it was translocated (in an inadequate position) and that it was also removed with an erroneous procedure.

This “could have triggered a generalized infection and, consequently, the amputation of both legs, the removal of the uterus and an ovary.”
In the complaint filed by the young woman, as reported by the CNDH, she indicated that, in September 2018, she went to an IMSS family medicine unit on at least 3 occasions in Queretaro due to abdominal pain, for which he was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and colitis, for which treatment was indicated.
In addition, he explained that he went to the gynecology-obstetrics area of a regional hospital to remove an IUD that was translocated, which “was removed with tweezers without previously performing an ultrasound or X-ray studies.”

Three days later, the woman presented with low back pain to the medical unit, where she was diagnosed with acute low back pain.
“The victim’s situation evolved unfavorably, so she appeared in the emergency room of the family unit and from there she was transferred to the regional hospital, where she was admitted due to severe blood loss, infectious gastroenteritis and severe dehydration,” the statement detailed. .
Given the above, the CNDH requested the general director of the IMSS, Zoé Robledo, to proceed to the “immediate” repair of the damage.
“Including the payment of sufficient financial compensation; the victim is provided with access to social programs that provide him with opportunities for development, and scholarships are granted in favor of his two directly affected relatives,” the CNDH indicated.

The victims must also receive the required psychological and psychiatric care and the IMSS must provide lifelong medical care as a result of the permanent disability and the sequelae, as well as the required prosthetic devices.
“You must collaborate with the Internal Control Body in the IMSS so that the complaint that will be filed against the public servants identified as responsible is processed and followed up,” the statement said.
