Mexico presents Tamayo mural to the UN. New York. A mural by Mexican artist Rufimo Tamayo, measuring nine by three meters and titled “Hermandad”, has been submitted to the UN on behalf of the people of Mexico. Emilio Rabasa, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, made the presentation and U Thant, Secretary General of the UN, thanked the great gift. The gigantic painting shows large human figures in silhouette against a red background, simulating people around a campfire.
At the presentation ceremony, Tamayo reported that his painting represents time or eternity as an element in which the brotherhood is expected to prevail. He declared that he had chosen this title because he considered it in keeping with the spirit of the United Nations, as an organization that supports peace among all the peoples of the world. The presentation ceremony was also attended by the Mexican delegate to the UN, Alfonso García Robles.
