Despite the fact that President López Obrador disqualified the PISA test for assuming it to be “neoliberal”, on May 7 he seemed to rectify it by promising that Mexico would participate in 2024.
Did he lie?
If not, the Ministry of Education cares little about dishonoring the presidential word: it still does not lift a finger in response to the calls of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which coordinates the test in almost a hundred countries (only 34 are members . Others are also very interested in investing in measuring basic school knowledge).
Although the preparation of the test takes approximately five months, there are only seven weeks left for Mexico to take the necessary steps and participate in next year’s PISA: the school year ends on July 16, and it is unthinkable that students They are made to return to the classrooms to answer an elementary questionnaire on mathematics, reading comprehension and science, topics in which the 2022 results were shameful.
Last April Andreas Schleicher, Director of Education and Skills at the OECD, warned:
“Mexico’s participation in the next PISA round is at risk, as I understand that the necessary preparations to implement the study have been suspended,” the official said.
In the absence of an official explanation, I infer that what was imposed is a multi-voice deception, in which characteristic defects of the 4t appear: sectarianism and pichicatería.
Read how the inexplicable head of Educational Materials of the SEP, Marx Arriaga, thinks:
“Perhaps now our president’s comment is more important than the 70 million contract for said test, although I bet that the parade of OECD advisors in the SEP will continue. The neoliberal roots in education are deep and twisted,” he wrote in X on December 6.
(This guy is the same guy who fails reading for pleasure)
The words he refers to are from the day before, when AMLO said in the morning:
“Those tests are part of the same thing. It is as if I were taking into account an opinion from the International Monetary Fund (…). All these parameters were created at the time of the predominance of the neoliberal period…”
In turn, the SEP made the nonsense that for the PISA test “they do not consider the real conditions in which the teaching work is carried out, as well as the situated processes (sic) of teaching and learning in the classrooms of the different countries.”
Supine ignorance: the PISA questions are elementary and understandable (like four is 50 percent of eight), the same for a girl from the Sierra Tarahumara or from Huasteca, Mérida, Tampico, Buenos Aires or Milan.
What made the president say just three weeks ago: “We participated without any problem. Everything that has to do with education is supported. We are seeing that they say that we are not going to participate, but we do accept it, we are open to all evaluations”?
AHA? Well, he backed off…
