In a show of courage and love without limits, the multidisciplinary team of the Zone General Hospital (HGZ) No. 33 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in New Lion carried out a highly complex surgical procedure.
This to save the life of Edgar Damián, a 30-year-old young man, whose heart was only functioning at 28% due to a chronic kidney failure that he had suffered for five years. This noble act of motherly love is carried out by Mrs. Margarita Sánchez.
From Aguascalientes to Nuevo León, to save his son
Edgar Damián, along with his mother, were transferred from the General Hospital of Zone No. 3 in the Jesús María ejido, Aguascalientes, to the medical unit in Monterrey to undergo the procedures. kidney donation and transplant surgeriesrespectively, as reported by the Transplant Nephrologist at HGZ No. 33, Dr. Norma Cecilia Ruíz Cruz.
Edgar took dialysis 9 hours a day for 2 years
The story of sacrifice and hope behind this act of love is moving. During the last two years, Edgar Damián faced difficult cancer treatments. peritoneal dialysis for nine hours a day.
This exhausting routine caused breathing problems, bone deterioration, anemia and heart failureplunging him into a state of hopelessness with a grim prognosis for his future.
However, hope came to life when his mother, Mrs. Margarita Sánchez, a hard-working woman dedicated to her family, decided to donate one of her kidneys to save her son’s life.
The risk of surgery for both
The donation process was carried out first at HGZ No. 3 in Aguascalientes and then completed at HGZ No. 33 in Nuevo León. On April 30, both surgeries were performed simultaneously, with the mother’s kidney being transplanted to the son.
The challenge was enormous. Given Edgar’s weak cardiovascular condition, medications were administered to strengthen his heart during surgery.
The medical team, made up of specialists in Anesthesiology, Transplant Surgery and Urology, supported by surgical nurses, worked hard for four hours, facing possible cardiac complications and other eventualities.
They will return home together and healthy!
The perseverance and commitment of the medical team was rewarded when both mother and son began to show signs of a favorable recovery.
Soon they will be able to return home with a renewed quality of life and hope for the future.
Doña Margarita Sánchez’s story of love and sacrifice moved everyone present. “I give you my kidney, son”, were the words he spoke, overflowing with emotions. For her, this act of love represented a second chance at life for both her son and herself.
During her recovery at Hospital No. 33 of the IMSS, Mrs. Margarita expressed with tears of joy: “If my children are happy, I am happy. But if they suffer, I suffer”. Her words reflect the immense love and dedication that a mother is willing to give for the well-being of her children.
