Mexico faces a crisis of drought unprecedented, with 12 states completely affected and 215 municipalities in a state of emergency. This situation could soon be seriously affecting the population and agriculture throughout the country.
The state Mexicans where 100% of their municipalities are experiencing some degree of drought are:
– Aguascalientes
– Chihuahua
– Mexico City
– Durango
– Guanajuato
– Gentleman
– Mexico state
– Morelos
– Nayarit
– Queretaro
– Sinaloa
– Tabasco
Besides, MichoacanSan Luis Potosí and Tlaxcala are suffering with more than 90% drought in all their municipalities.
Exceptional drought: Emergency in 215 municipalities
According to the latest report from the National Meteorological Service, as of April 30, 2024, 215 municipalities in Mexico have been identified that are experiencing exceptional droughtthe most severe degree of drought.
Between the states most affected by drought they find each other:
– Chihuahua: 35 municipalities and 100% of the territory affected.
– Durango: 11 municipalities in a state of emergency.
– Guanajuato: 11 municipalities experiencing exceptional drought.
– Hidalgo: 46 municipalities with exceptional drought.
– State of Mexico: 4 municipalities affected.
– Tamaulipas: 4 municipalities in critical condition.
– Queretaro: 15 municipalities completely affected.
– San Luis Potosí: 41 municipalities in a state of emergency.
– Sinaloa: 8 municipalities seriously affected.
– Sonora: 21 municipalities experiencing extreme drought.
– Veracruz: 18 municipalities affected.
In total there are 1,963 municipalities in Mexico that are suffering some type of drought, from moderate drought (D1) to exceptional drought (D4).
The situation is alarming. Zacatecas, Puebla, State of Mexico, Warrior and Chiapas are suffering with drought levels that range between 85.6% and 89.7% of their territory.
Baja California and Baja California South are the only states in Mexico that They are not experiencing any type of drought at this time.
