Mexico City.- The governments of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia indicated that the electoral conflict in Venezuela must be resolved through institutional means and that there must be impartial verification of the results.
In a joint statement, the three leftist governments called on political and social actors to exercise maximum caution and restraint in their demonstrations and public events in order to avoid an escalation of violent episodes.
“Disputes regarding the electoral process must be resolved through institutional channels. The fundamental principle of popular sovereignty must be respected through impartial verification of the results,” they said.
The statement was issued after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced this morning that he was likely to hold a telephone conversation with his counterparts from Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Gustavo Petro, from Colombia.
“We are going to discuss the positions that exist in the case of Venezuela. We have acted prudently so as not to get involved in an issue that fundamentally concerns Venezuelans,” he said.
“That is why we propose first that there be no violence; second, that the will of the Venezuelan people be respected; third, that evidence and the minutes of the electoral results be presented; and fourth, that there be no interference.”
López Obrador criticized the role of the Organization of American States (OAS).
“What happened, unfortunately, with the Secretary General of the OAS, the election was on Sunday and Tuesday, he declared that the elections had been fraudulent and that one candidate had not won, but another had won, without having any proof of anything,” he complained.
