Have you ever wondered how an object can be mistaken for a meteorite for 150 years? That’s what happened to the National Museum Of Natural Science with the so-called “Cuban meteorite”, a metallic object weighing approximately 1.3 kg, which was only recently revealed for what it really is.
This enigmatic object has been proudly displayed since 1871, believed to be a relic from another world. However, a team of researchers from University Of Havana and of Floridacoordinated by Aurelio Nieto, curator of the museum’s Geology collection, discovered its true nature. Not what it seems but simple industrial slag, a residue of iron from the steel industry.
Meteorite and the error in detail
The mistake of classification was unmasked when they carried out a more detailed analysis, cutting the object with a hydraulic saw. They have observed bubbles inside, a characteristic not associated with a meteorite, but typical of metal residues produced by man.
And you, have you ever believed that something is different from what it seems? Share yours experience!
