Meta Quest 2 and 3 they get a new mode that allows the device to be used on the go right with the Travel Modeor the travel modecurrently only usable in airplane but still evolving.
This mode was inserted with the software version 65 or later system of the viewer, and can be activated by going to Settings and from there to experimental features. From here, within the quick settings panel, you can apply Travel Mode.
This works in passtrhough and allows you to view various windows overlaid with the real surrounding scenario, in a similar way to the mixed reality that can be performed with Apple Vision Pro, to give a practical example.
A mode that responds to Apple Vision Pro
The system recognizes elements of the surrounding environment and applies them windows partially in accordance with the arrangement of surrounding real objects, although the thing is still being fully worked out.
The travel mode of Meta Quest 2 and 3 cannot be used, at the moment, when traveling by car or train, but only by plane. However, it is possible that this will be expanded to other transport systems as soon as it becomes possible to compensate for movement automatically.
To use it on a plane, however, it is necessary to deactivate position tracking, to prevent open windows from moving and scrolling outside the field of view.
This is a mode that somehow challenges the characteristics of Apple Vision Pro, even if the results are not yet completely comparable, as is obvious given the difference in hardware (and price) between the two devices.
Last month we saw that the price of Meta Quest 2 was permanently reduced to $199, while on Meta Quest 3 the new update introduced the “lying down” mode and much more.
