Canada.- Meta, the parent company of platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, has announced the integration of its new artificial intelligence (AI) tool into its services in Canada. However, this move has generated controversy since the function cannot be deactivated by users.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the company said that Meta AI It is designed to “get things done, learn, create, and connect with what matters to you.” The tool has been deployed in several countries, including Canada, Australia, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Featured features include the ability to request recommendations, such as finding a restaurant with sunset views and vegan options, or explaining relevant topics for students preparing for exams. Additionally, the program can generate images based on textual descriptions.
Meta AI is integrated into the application search bar and uses the Llama 3 model. However, reports have already emerged about unwanted applications of the new tool.
For example, the Associated Press reported that an official chatbot from Meta AI infiltrated a conversation in a private Facebook group for Manhattan mothers. The chatbot claimed to have a son at a New York City school, but when he was confronted by members of the group, he apologized before his comments were deleted, according to screenshots shared with The Associated Press.
Facebook's online help page notes that Meta AI will participate in a group conversation if it is mentioned, or if someone asks a question in a post and no one responds within an hour. However, group administrators have the option to disable this feature.
Meta AI implementation raises concerns about user privacy and control about your interactions on Meta platforms. The lack of a clear option to disable the feature could lead to discontent among users who want to limit AI intervention in their online experiences.
