The outgoing chancellor: “I leave important construction sites open to my successor”
“Countries that joined the Union at a later date could have the feeling that they have accepted something that already existed. But the treaties are well known, and everyone has ratified them ». These are the words of the outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel on the Polish crisis, in what could perhaps be the last European Council in which she takes part. His 107th, in his sixteen years at the helm of Germany.
The reference is to Poland, whose Constitutional Court has decided to reaffirm the primacy of national law over Community law. A move contrary to the treaties that regulate the functioning of the European Union and to the judgments of the Court of Justice which over the years have corroborated the interpretation of this principle.
The meeting with the Polish leader
German politics reported meeting with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He expressed “deep concern about the downward spiral” in which Poland finds itself with regard to community values, while reiterating the need for debate and confrontation. A theme that is linked with the historical processes of the nation: «If we look at the history of Poland – observes Merkel – we understand very well that the question of defining national identity plays an important role. This is a different historical situation compared to that of the countries that had democracy after the Second World War ”.
Get out of the spiral
According to the Chancellor, “It is not just a legal problem, but also a political one.” And he assured that during the debate held by European leaders on the issue, there was a broad agreement and that “the correct way to resolve the dispute is in mutual respect. We have to get out of this spiral of confrontation ».
“I leave construction sites open”
Then a passage on the end of his chancellorship: «I am leaving my responsibilities at a time that is also a source of concern for me. We have been able to overcome a large number of crises with this spirit of respect and the will to find common solutions. Despite this, there remain unsolved problems and the construction sites that I leave open to my successor ».
