We had already expected that we had not yet seen the finished product of Mercedes during the first shakedown, last month in Barcelona. But we could not have imagined that the final car would differ so radically from the competition. Mouths dropped in amazement and admiration when the Mercedes W13 took to the track for the first time this morning in Bahrain. Mercedes has found a way to completely remove the sidepods from the car.
The sidepods are the wide units on the side of the car that have an air scoop on them. These have the function of cooling the engine. Sidepods are not necessarily good for aerodynamics, but they are necessary. But if the Mercedes can drive without sidepods, they could make the whole car a lot more streamlined.
Over the next three days, Hamilton and Russell will be able to test whether this extreme design also has the desired effect. Assume that the general public will only really know in Bahrain whether this is the quickest solution. If that is the case, not only will we see the Mercedes without sidepods, but other teams in the future will also want to adopt this design as soon as possible.
