Mercedes-Benz has announced a significant update to its automated driving system, DRIVE PILOT, which reaches an unprecedented level of innovation. This system, classified as SAE-Level 3, will be able to follow a vehicle on the highway at a speed up to 95 km/hgiving a considerable advantage to its customers.
A step forward in automated driving
The DRIVE PILOT update represents a real evolution in the field of autonomous driving. Thanks to this technology, drivers will be able to delegate part of the responsibility to the vehicle, thus allowing greater comfort during long-distance journeys. Mercedes-Benz is preparing for the recertification by the German Federal Motor Transport Authorityexpected by the end of 2024: once approved, sales of the new system could begin in early 2025.
Price and customer updates
A particularly interesting aspect is the price of the DRIVE PILOT system will remain unchanged, making access to this advanced technology even more attractive. In addition, customers who already own vehicles equipped with DRIVE PILOT will benefit from a free update: depending on the model, the update can be carried out wirelessly via over-the-air (OTA) or, if necessary, at an authorised workshop. Importantly, no intervention on vehicle components will be required, significantly simplifying the process for users.
Mercedes and autonomous driving
“With this updated version of the DRIVE PILOT, Mercedes-Benz is once again underlining its pioneering role in automated driving – commented Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Purchasing – It will soon be possible to activate conditionally automated driving up to 95 km/h in flowing traffic under certain conditions on the German Autobahn. This will enable our customers to use their time even more efficiently. Mercedes-Benz is once again setting industry standards and constantly paving the way towards autonomous driving.”
