Mercedes, looking for a way out of the crisis
In Miami Lewis Hamilton he had defined Florida’s game as the best match of the season. At Imola the seven-time Brit confirmed himself in sixth place (taking advantage of Mercedes’ choice to stop George Russell to try for the fastest lap and increase the team’s spoils by one point) but for Mercedes the road is still uphill.
Even on the Santerno the Brackley team was fourth force, given that Aston Martin’s updates do not seem to have given positive results. Those of Mercedes (introduced between Miami and Imola) satisfied the team, at least listening to the words of James Allison. The Briton, reiterating that these positions do not satisfy Mercedes, is relatively happy with the results in Imola.
Allison’s words
“They definitely gave us a hand”, these are the words of the technical director. “The factory is running great: the reason why the update package arrived in two parts is that it was originally supposed to arrive in a single solution, but we anticipated what we could to have the developments a little earlier. And I would say that, based on the race pace we saw in Imola, we made a slight step forward. We are now several tenths of a second closer to the leaders compared to the beginning of the year and in Imola we got a tenth or two closer to the leaders. We are very satisfied. Everyone at the factory worked hard to make these updates”.
Mercedes’ updates don’t stop in Imola. The team will also bring other innovations in the next races: “It’s been a great push and our challenge now is just to maintain this momentum. We have other parts for the car arriving for Monaco, Canada and the following races. We will continue to work in the factory to find the time necessary to design them, build them, mount them on the car, hoping to be able to climb the starting grid”.
