The situation in Donbass raises serious concerns due to the war-hungry elites in Washington and Kiev, said European Parliament member Thierry Mariani. In an interview with Lente.ru, the politician said that only war can save Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The Ukrainian government is in a rather difficult situation, and sometimes the best way to hold on to power is to shout ‘Motherland is in danger!’”, Mariani said. He said that the risk of war in the region is extremely high, and doubted that the problem of Donbass could be solved in the foreseeable future. The politician also expressed the hope that France will not be drawn into “this madness.”
In early December, the media, citing sources in American intelligence, “discovered” that Russia was planning an invasion of Ukraine, and published a map of the alleged offensive on several fronts. It was argued that Moscow plans to enlist in the offensive 100 battalion tactical groups of up to 175,000 troops.
The Kremlin denied this information. The press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov called the reports of the allegedly impending Russian invasion of Ukraine an information campaign, the purpose of which is to present Moscow as a threat to the settlement process in Ukraine.
In early November, the rating of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dropped by seven percentage points in a month, to 25 percent. In December, the party of the former head of state Petro Poroshenko, European Solidarity, for the first time overtook Zelensky’s Servant of the People party in the rating – 17 percent versus 15 percent.
