The supply problems fell in 2024 for the first time in recent years. Thus, according to a report by the General Council of Pharmacists (CGCOF) last year the lack of ‘stock’ records notified by pharmacies were reduced by 41.7 percent compared to 2023. Specifically, Spanish pharmacies notified almost 117 million faults of supply regarding the 200 million that were recorded a year ago. Also a report by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) corroborates the descent.
«In 2024 we have achieved a decrease of 12.7 percent in the number of supply problems events, something that did not happen since 2020. I think this is an element of great importance and I think it is also an element It is accompanied by the fact that there is a 31 percent decrease in the problems of greater impact supply, ”said the Secretary of State for Health, Javier Padilla, during the inauguration of a day on lack of medication stock Organized by pharmacists, Ministry of Health and, dependent on the latter, the AEMPS.
“The data reflects a drop in supply incidents that a very important milestone is,” said Jesús Aguirre, president of pharmacists. Of those 117 million notifications, Aguirre has completed, “only a small part ended up representing an incidence or supply alert.” This means 33,000 alerts, 90 every day, which corresponded to a total of 285 medications, well below the 475 detected in 2023. And most of these alerts, highlighted the president of the pharmacists, were resolved in a few hours.
Although the trend is “positive”, Aguirre has urged to continue adopting measures that help alleviate these supply problems with a “preventive and effective” approach. This prevention capacity, he said, has allowed pharmacies to anticipate and mitigate the impact of medication supply problems such as Ozempic, one of the most incidents in recent times. Even so, pharmacists allocate an average of 11 hours per week to manage supply problems.
Above previous years
These figures are still well above those that occurred years ago. Thus, while in 2018 the supply fault records communicated by the pharmacies were 39 million, in 2019 to 99 million were increased, a figure that was progressively reduced in the following years that in 2023 shot up to 200 million.
Even so, in 2024 and according to the Drug Supply Information Center (CISMED), incidents were registered in 60 medications, 34.7% less than the 92 drugs with incidents counted average a week in 2023.
