Mexico City.- Prisca Awiti was welcomed as a heroine in Mexico City after winning a silver medal in judo at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Amidst the shoving, cheering and applause of a large crowd of tricolor fans, the Mexican medalist landed on capital soil after her successful Olympic adventure.
“I’m very proud, very happy about this madness. The number 20 is just falling on me. It’s an incredible feeling, I’m very happy to be able to bring this medal to Mexico. I didn’t expect so many people here, I didn’t expect all the support,” said Awiti.
“I am very happy to be here in Mexico, in my country, and to be able to celebrate this medal with my family and the whole country. It is like a dream,” he added.
The judoka hopes that her result in France will inspire new generations of Mexican athletes to begin practicing their discipline.
“It’s a very important result, not only for the country, but for Mexican judo. I managed to raise it to the top and I hope that many people in the country start practicing judo and discover how beautiful the sport is. I hope that this inspires all the generations to come. It’s a very beautiful sport and if you dedicate yourself, anything can be achieved.”
