The Russian offensive against Ukraine has gained repudiation around the world and companies from various sectors are suspending their activities in Russia. This Tuesday (8) it was McDonald’s turn to announce the closing of its stores in the country. The company employs 62,000 people in Russia and will temporarily close all 850 restaurants in the country.
“The conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Europe have caused unspeakable suffering to innocent people. As a System, we join the world in condemning aggression and violence and praying for peace.” “Our number one priority since the beginning of this crisis has been – and will continue to be – our people.”

The company said in a press release that it will continue to pay full salaries to Ukrainian employees and has donated $5 million to the Employee Assistance Fund.
“As many of our colleagues in Ukraine have sought refuge, they have found familiar support from the McDonald’s System in new and unfamiliar places. In Poland and many other European markets, our System has literally opened their homes, their hearts and their restaurants. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Poland Care Mobile is on the Polish-Ukrainian border to provide medical care and humanitarian aid for families and children, and another Care Mobile is on its way to RMHC Latvia. In addition, RMHC Ukraine is distributing medical supplies and providing humanitarian aid across the country, and its programs are being repurposed for use by hospital staff.”
Unlike other major fast-food brands in Russia that are owned by franchisees, including KFC, Pizza Hut and Burger King, McDonald’s owns 84% of its Russian stores, according to The Sun.
Pressure has been strong for companies to move their operations out of Russia. Other corporations have already ceased their operations in the country in protest against the invasion of Ukraine.
