Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed a new State of Play for this week. Let’s take stock of what we can expect from the internal teams at PlayStation Studios.
Confirming the numerous rumors of the past weeks, today Sony has made a new official State of Play which will air at 11.59pm on Thursday 30 May with a show lasting over half an hour, which effectively acts as the forerunner of the summer conferences that will take place from now until around mid-June. Clearly this is an event not to be missed for all PS5 players, although it is good to maintain a certain level of expectations when talking about internal PlayStation Studios productions.
Sony’s announcement actually talks about 14 PS5 and PS VR2 titles which obviously also includes third parties. Here you are truly spoiled for choice, between games already known and others to be revealed. However, let’s assume that there will be no Silent Hill 2 Remakeas it will be the main course of the Konami event which will air shortly after the State of Play.
Concord, Astro Bot and maybe even other new IPs?
Sony says there will be one too look “at PlayStation Studios games coming this year”. Taking this part of the company’s concise statement into consideration, we already know that it is best not to hold our breath waiting for new high-profile games from PlayStation Studios’ most famous series.
As you may remember, in February Hiroki Totoki, president, COO and CFO of Sony, declared that no new games from existing major series will arrive until March 2025. This however does not exclude new IPs, remakes or remasters or perhaps smaller projects. Indeed, in reality we can already assume that two of the internal productions that will be presented during the State of Play are certain.
The first is I agree, the sci-fi multiplayer shooter from Firewalk Studios, already confirmed for 2024 by the company and of which we should see the first gameplay sequences during the event, according to the sources of the reliable bilbill-kun. The same “deep throat” also takes for granted the announcement of Astro Bot, a new game starring the PlayStation mascot created by Team Asobi.
And who knows, there might also be space for the next project Housemarque, the team behind the excellent Returnal. Here there have been no rumors about it, but last year the studio promised to reveal some new features during 2024, and what better occasion than the State of Play? Let’s then mention the guys from BluepointGameswhich have completely disappeared from the radar since the remake of Demon’s Souls for PS5 and who, who knows, could surprise us with another highly requested remake (yes, I know you’re thinking of Bloodborne, but maybe it’s Knack!).
Will there be room for some surprises and PS5 Pro?
That said, nothing stops Sony from doing an exception to the “rule” for any possible surprises from PlayStation Studio, perhaps with a trailer for a game arriving later in time. For example Ghost of Tsushima 2, even just to ride the enthusiasm of the recent conversion to PC. After all, there have been no updates from Sucker Punch for years and it is reasonable to think that he has been working on a sequel for some time.
Speaking of PC, billbil-kun also received the tip-off that the conversion of God of War: Ragnarok will be made official within a few days, while a few hours ago the certification for an official adapter for using PS VR 2 on PC appeared online . So far Sony has always relegated specific announcements for this market to the cold pages of the PlayStation Blog, but as we know the company’s strategy may have changed, with greater consideration for the numerous players who purchase on Steam and Epic Games Store. After all, Totoki had always spoken of a more aggressive multiplatform approach and therefore it is not so unthinkable that a segment of the event is dedicated to this platform.
Less likely, but not to be ruled out a priori, is a first hint at the much-rumored event PS5 Pro, the console with enhanced hardware, whose existence is practically taken for granted and which could arrive in the last quarter of the year. An announcement with great fanfare is perhaps a little premature, but who knows, there might be room for a teaser and a first hint of the console’s features.
And what do you expect from this week’s State of Play? Let us know in the comments below.
