Q1 and Q2
Prior to qualifying, the Porsche Supercup race was held at Spa. A crash at the end of that race delays the start of Q1 by half an hour. Verstappen and Leclerc, among others, already know that tomorrow they will start somewhere at the back of the field due to penalties for engine changes. However, there is still something to gain for them as there are many drivers with such penalties and the head-to-head results of those drivers determine the order at the back of the field.
For that reason, both Verstappen and Leclerc are still going for it in the first two qualifying sessions. Verstappen is then fastest in Q1, after which Leclerc sets the fastest time in Q2. There are no big surprises in these sessions.
Q3
In the final minutes there are only a few drivers who can be on pole position tomorrow. In the first fast laps, Verstappen is the fastest again. He is followed by Sainz and Pérez. Leclerc gets the wrong tires from his team and sets the fourth fastest time. The timing for the Monegask means he can only do one lap. Verstappen also gives up on it.
Pérez, Sainz and the Mercedes can go around the circuit one more time. Nobody knows how to go much faster in the second rounds. Max Verstappen therefore remains the fastest, but will start P15 tomorrow due to the grid penalty. Leclerc starts sixteenth. Sainz will start from pole position tomorrow with Pérez next to him on the front row.
