“The president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella this evening, at the end of the inauguration ceremony at the Quirinale palace, he received the president of the Council of Ministers Mario Draghi, who, according to practice, presented him with the resignation of the government. The President of the Republic thanked him and invited him to withdraw his resignation. The Prime Minister accepted the invitation addressed to him by the President of the Republic “, explains a note from the Quirinale.
Why Draghi resigned
Courtesy resignations were provided for by the monarchical order, for which the government resigned when the King was changed, rejected by the Head of State. The custom has remained even with the passage to the Republic and is commonly interpreted with the bond of trust represented by the fact that the Prime Minister receives the office from the President of the Republic: therefore it is easy to understand the logic of resigning the office when the Head of state. This is certainly not the case with Dragons, which was called by Mattarella to recompose a situation of great political uncertainty. In any case, the Premier considered it appropriate to do the beau geste.
