Mattarella: “Let’s consecrate European sovereignty”. Attack of the League on the Quirinale
Frontal attack by the League on the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on Republic Day. This morning, with a tweet, the Northern League senator Claudio Borghi evoked the resignation of the Head of State. “It is June 2nd, it is the Italian Republic Day. Today the Sovereignty of our Nation is consecrated. If the President really thinks that the Sovereignty belongs to the European Union instead of Italy, for consistency he should resign, because his function does not it would make more sense”, Borghi’s words.
But let’s take a step back. Yesterday, the President of the Republic, sending a message to the prefects of Italy, underlined that it is necessary “to remember the ideal legacy of those founding events”, like the Liberation struggle and the republican choice, “it is a civic duty and a precious opportunity to reflect together on the reasons that animate the life of our community, inserted today in the wider community of the European Union which we have decided to give life to with the other free peoples of the continent and whose sovereignty we will consecrate, in a few days, with the election of the European Parliament”.
A concept to which Mattarella returned this morning, declaring that “the Fathers of the Fatherland were aware of the risks and limits of closure in national contexts and dreamed of an Italy open to Europe, close to the peoples who were fighting for their freedoms everywhere in the world”.
The secretary of the League, Matteo Salvini, arrived to lend a hand to Borghi: “Today is Republic Day, today is the feast of the Italians, of the Republic, not of European sovereignty. We have a President of the Republic because there is the Republic, I think of Europe as sovereign states that come together, but national sovereignty is fundamental, beyond the tweets today we celebrate the Italian Republic. I will never surrender to a European super state where those who have the money are in charge”, said Deputy Prime Minister Salvini on In mezzo’ora on Rai Tre.
Borghi (Italia viva): “The League distorts Mattarella’s words, a serious matter”
“That the League, on Republic Day, even goes so far as to ask for President Mattarella’s resignation, distorting the words he uttered, is an extremely serious fact that cannot go unnoticed. The frantic search for visibility of those who are ‘in search of an almost desperate consensus cannot go so far as to involve the guarantor of our Constitution and our national unity.” The senator of Italia Viva Enrico Borghi, group leader in the Senate, writes this on X, posting a comment by Claudio Borghi.
Mattarella: “Far-sighted Constitution resulting from the Liberation”
“Celebrating the seventy-eight years of the birth of the Italian Republic recalls the values of our identity and of a far-sighted and wise Constitution, the fruit of the extraordinary rebirth that began with the Liberation struggle”. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, wrote this to the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, on the occasion of 2 June.

Mattarella: defend conquests of independence and freedom
“Independence and freedom are achievements that must be defended every day, in common purpose and with the ability to cooperate for the common good”. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, on the occasion of 2 June.
Mattarella: Italy’s precious contribution to the cause of peace
“Our contribution – and in it the Armed Forces – to the cause of international peace and stability is more precious than ever in today’s situation characterized by devastation and aggression against civilian populations in Europe and the Middle East”. Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, on the occasion of 2 June. “The Republic is grateful to the women and men of the Armed Forces for the tasks carried out in the demanding operational theaters where they are called to operate, within the framework of the United Nations missions, those resulting from solidarity between the countries of the Atlantic Alliance , of the decisions in which we contributed within the European Union”, adds the Head of State.
