(Editor) Hawaii, United States.- The great “rider” of the waves of Mazatlán, Martín Díaz Martínez, hit the accelerator at the Hawaii Surfing Adaptive Surfing Championships, held in Waikiki, achieving second place in the above-knee amputation category, at the first stop of the Adaptive Surfing World Tour.
This year the renowned “Shutama” was lucky enough to have better waves in the qualification rounds, but the determining factor in his improvement was the change in strategy in the “backside” training, which helped him have a better performance and a better score from the judges.

“We kept practicing right-hand waves at Playa Los Picos, on Isla de la Piedra, as well as north of Mazatlán, which worked very well for me in competition, since although they are the same size, are a little more complicated than the traditional leftist waves,” explained Martín Díaz.
With second place, the Mazatlan surfer improved the third place achieved in the same championship in 2023, going from a score of 12.36 to 13.56, which motivates him to continue working for the next tour dates.
“It is the first time with a silver medal in this tournament in Hawaii. On this occasion the waves were in good condition, I felt very happy to surf on a different wave than Mazatlán, but more so knowing that we are in the cradle of world surfing. “This is for everyone,” he expressed.
The Hawaii Surfing Adaptive Surfing Championships took place from May 13 to 16, with the participation of 130 of the best athletes in this sport from around the world, from 18 different countries.
The next stop for “Shutama” will be the Costa Rica Open Pro Adaptive Surfing, which will take place in Boca Barranca, from June 18 to 23.
