First rounds of suffering
Marc Marquez is back. Not yet to victory, which only eluded him thanks to a fantastic Pecco Bagnaia, but to fight there in front of everyone, as he was used to doing in the days of his triumphs with Honda. The second place in Jerez it was celebrated as a success by the Gresini team representative, who now truly seems to be in control of his GP23. The honorable placing came despite a uphill start of the race, as Marquez himself admitted. In fact, the #93 fell from first to fourth in just a few laps, before starting the exhilarating pursuit of the world champion.
“I enjoyed it because I ended up like it happened a long time ago, with the another rider's tire on the suit – said Marquez to Sky Sport MotoGP, showing the 'signs' of the duel that pitted him against Bagnaia – Unfortunately in the first five laps I was too stiff. It was normal, I crashed in Austin and yesterday and also in Moto2, many crashed at turn 13, where I made a mistake on the first lap. I told myself to stay calm because the race would be long and I was until there were 15 laps to go. At that point I started pushing harder and feeling better. Everyone struggled to overtake because the front tire pressure increased, but when I overtook a rider I had the speed to catch another.”.
What a duel with Pecco
Then, in the final laps, the direct duel with Bagnaia: “I took Pecco and the first attempt was the good one, but he defended himself very well. I'm happy because it wasn't easy to have a race like this after yesterday and after Austin. I knew Bagnaia would react and that I would have to pass him in two laps once he caught it, because after you stay behind a rider for two laps the front tire heats up and you can no longer break away well. He set the fastest lap with two laps to go and it is Pecco's experience and confidence with this bike. He is the champion“.
Martin's fall, however, 'revived' the world championship ranking of Marquez too, who does not hide some interesting ambitions: “There will be circuits where we will struggle – concluded the eight-time world champion – but I'm happy because little by little I'm going stronger. Tomorrow we have an important test to understand two or three things, but the team is working very well and Ducati is helping me find a way to be faster. Even with this not a good start to the World Championship, with too many crashes, we are still not far from the leaders“.
