Gambling company The commercial cooperation between Unibet and the JVG group violated several consumer marketing rules, says the consumer ombudsman.
According to the Consumer Ombudsman’s press release, there were problems with marketing recognition, at least in the band’s Instagram releases and in the music video for the Frisbee song. The band was also considered to have marketed Unibet in Finland, although the marketing of foreign gambling companies is prohibited in Finland.
“Companies always have a responsibility for their marketing, but the responsibility and awareness of influencers and public figures is further emphasized as social media brings more and more opportunities to implement marketing collaboration. Surreptitious advertising is not acceptable under any circumstances, ”said the Consumer Ombudsman Katri Väänänen says in a press release.
JVG: n Instagram publications used the topic tag #teamunibet at the end of the text, but otherwise the publications did not indicate that it was a commercial collaboration.
According to the Consumer Ombudsman, the recognition of marketing is created, for example, by an indication of an advertisement or commercial cooperation at the very beginning of the publication.
In the Frisbee music video, JVG dressed up as a racing driver with Unibet as its only advertising brand. According to the Consumer Ombudsman, the video was later republished and the Unibet logos had been blurred.
The music video was originally released on Unibet’s Youtube channel. According to the Consumer Ombudsman, it is clear from this that it was part of a commercial cooperation between JVG and Unibet, but this was not made clear.
The Consumer Ombudsman points out that even if the commercial cooperation had been revealed to a person who watched the video on Unibet’s Youtube channel, the videos could also be shared on social media, in which case the publication channel would not be as clear.

According to the Consumer Ombudsman, in co-operation between JVG and Unibet, the marketing of foreign gambling was directed to Finland, and therefore the National Board of Police found the marketing to be in breach of the Lotteries Act.
According to the press release, the Consumer Ombudsman also took a stand on the matter, as illegal marketing is in conflict with generally accepted social values and is therefore also contrary to good practice under the Consumer Protection Act.
According to the Consumer Ombudsman, the artists acted as professional influencers in the matter, ie the marketing was a matter of doing business.
