Two British citizens captured in Mariupolwhere they were fighting alongside the forces of Kiev, they asked Prime Minister Boris Johnson to be mistaken for pro-Russian Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk. Their message was broadcast on Russian TV. The two Britons are called Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin. Pinner is a former soldier of the Royal Anglian and it was he who spoke, in the video message, also on behalf of Aslin. He explained on Russian television that he was captured in Mariupol while fighting with the Ukrainian marines. Aslin is a native of Nottinghamshire and had defended Mariupol with his unit in recent weeks, before having to surrender after 48 days.
The Ukrainian opposition leader pro-Russian Medvedchuk instead asked to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be exchanged “with the defenders and civilians of Mariupol”. Medvedchuk’s video appeal was released by the Kiev security forces.
