The blue overtook Cheung in the semifinal but surrendered against the Frenchman. Out of Foconi and Garozzo
Tommaso Marini’s individual foil is silver which leads to Italy at the Cairo World Cup after those of Fiamingo (bronze in the sword) and Errigo (silver in the foil). The 22-year-old from Ancona arrives in the final after overcoming the Olympic champion Cheung in the semifinals. But in the last act to reach gold he must surrender to the last jab against the French Enzo Lefort, reigning world champion who thus confirms his title conquered in Budapest 2019 by winning 15-14. The blue comeback well from 4-10 up to parity at 10 and then to 14 going up again from 3 points behind but Lefort is the winning shot that closes an intense and even dramatic assault. For Marini another high level podium after the one won at the European Championships in Turkey. Italy still lacks gold in the medal table. Team competitions can fill the void from tomorrow.
Outside Garozzo
–
The curse of the World Cup continues for Daniele Garozzo, the top blue of the Italian expedition at the world championship in Cairo. The Rio Olympian and European champion in Antalya sees his dream of making the Grand Slam broken in the third round of the individual foil competition. Two opponents beat him: the strong Hungarian Szemes who wins 15-12 and an injury on the right side of the side that forces him to a medical check on the score of 10-10. Next 7-3, Garozzo is reassembled then his ordeal begins. He returns to the platform, puts the last advantage on 12-11 but then has to yield under the blows of an opponent who does not give him breath. So after Alice Volpi’s quick exit from the scene, her boyfriend also ends up knocked out. Both remain the team test to redeem themselves.
